Our students had the chance to dive deep into the fascinating world of science as part of the British Science Week celebrations.
Highlights of the week included the following:
Rat Dissection – A Peek into the Inner Workings of Life
One of the most anticipated activities of Science Week was the rat dissection. This was an incredible opportunity for students to explore anatomy in a practical and educational way. Guided by our science teachers, students carefully examined the organs of a rat, gaining a deeper understanding of the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems.
The Iodine Clock – A Race Against Time
This colourful experiment demonstrated the power of chemical reactions in a race against time! Students mixed different solutions, observing how the iodine would turn a brilliant shade of blue when the reaction reached a specific point. It was a perfect example of how science can be both a thrilling and visual experience.
Online Shows – Science Brought to Life
For a wider perspective, we also hosted two online science shows. These virtual experiences featured various jobs in the biomedical field as well as the opportunity to participate in some interesting experiments to do with our senses.
Drop Challenge – Engineering at Its Best
Perhaps one of the most fun and competitive activities was the Egg Drop Challenge! Students were tasked with designing a protective structure that would prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from a great height. Using everyday materials, they got creative and problem-solved their way to success. Some designs were more successful than others, but the experience taught valuable lessons in engineering principles, testing hypotheses, and working as a team.
Assemblies
We were privileged to have ex-Weald student Zarina Hewett as our guest speaker this year, speaking about her research into climate change and the exciting opportunities her career has taken her, including time on a research ship in the Arctic.
